Are you playing it as a standalone? You can't go back to previous floor in the standalone (in the main campaign you can). It works slightly different in two modes.

Once you hit the relevant chapter in the main campaign, the game will ask you to import the Varnhold campaign save.

I thought the lore for all 4 mini bosses are done fabulously and I really felt for the Wicked Chanter as well. So yes, well done Owlcats! :)
